Beginner’s Guide to Watercolour: Relax, Unwind & Paint Your First Masterpiece

Beginner’s Guide to Watercolour: Relax, Unwind & Paint Your First Masterpiece

Looking for a creative escape that’s more soothing than scrolling? 🖌️ Imagine a quiet moment, a brush in one hand, a cup of tea in the other, and colours flowing across the paper like a gentle tide.

Watercolour painting isn’t just for “artsy” people — it’s for anyone craving a little me time, a way to slow down, and a touch of je ne sais quoi in their week.

I’m Pascale, artist and founder of Et Voilà Studios, and I’m here to show you how easy (and addictive!) it is to start your watercolour journey — whether you’re painting at home with our Et Voilà Kit or joining me in person at my monthly workshop in Sydney.

Why Watercolour is the Perfect Beginner Art Form

Many beginners think they need to be “good at drawing” before they can paint. Oh là là… not true! Here’s why watercolour is such a beginner-friendly medium:

  • Easy to start – All you need is paint, water, paper, and a brush. No messy setup, no expensive gear.
  • Forgiving & fluid – Mistakes? They often become the most beautiful part of the painting.
  • Versatile – From soft florals to juicy lemons, there’s a whole world to explore.
  • Relaxing & mindful – The repetitive brushstrokes and gentle flow of colour have a calming effect that’s perfect for winding down after a busy day.

The Mindfulness Side of Painting

Watercolour is more than just a creative hobby — it’s a form of meditative play. Here’s how to make it mindful:

  1. Breathe with your brushstrokes – Inhale as you load your brush, exhale as you sweep colour across the page.
  2. Notice the water flow – Watch how the pigment blooms into the paper. That’s your little moment of magic.
  3. Let go of perfection – This isn’t about getting it “right”; it’s about enjoying the process.

Think of it as yoga for your creativity — but without the awkward downward dog.

What You Need to Get Started

You could spend hours browsing an art store (and feeling overwhelmed), or… you could make it simple. Here’s the basics:

  • Watercolour paints
  • A brush (I love aqua brushes for their ease)
  • Good paper (300gsm, cold-pressed)

Our Et Voilà Watercolour Kit has everything you need to get started — curated paints, a quality aqua brush, beginner-friendly templates, and step-by-step guidance. You just add water and a dash of curiosity.

Step-by-step watercolour sunny side up painting for beginners

Your First Project – Paint a Sunny Side Up 🍳

Let’s start with something cheerful and simple — a sunny side up.

  1. Load your brush with a lemon yellow wash (tea consistency).
  2. Paint an oval shape, leaving a small white highlight for shine.
  3. Add a second layer of orange once the first is dry for extra depth.
  4. Drop in a touch of burnt sienna for the edge of the egg white and the yolk for a 3D effect.
  5. Sit back, admire, and resist the urge to cook an egg.
